My research was to find a more optimal algorithm to apply reconfiguration for an optical network-on-chip. This research began with an introduction to an optical network-on-chip called the Ouroboros Network, and the goal was to simulate this network and apply reconfiguration algorithms that may improve performance of the network. This included building a simulator and modeling algorithms to fit the network processes. The simulator took a great deal of time and therefore yielded limited results usable for research. I have learned that it is important to meet with your mentor and make sure the goal of the research is clear from the beginning. While free reign to make up research is nice, it needs guidance to stand on its own as complete and full research. My academic career goal is to attend graduate school and obtain a PhD. Personally, this REU has lowered my expectations, but I know this can't be the case for every REU or research in general. I will still continue to pursue a career in research. I would recommend this program to MESA students if they have an interest in computer science research. Also for those not used to the east coast, just know that the weather is very different. It has been very humid and been frequented with lightning storm. I only add this since one would live here for quite a good time, and it is important to also like the place you must reside for 10 weeks. I hope this can help other students and that your future summer REU goes well.
